Joining the MSUTR

Twins and families with twin children typically join the MSUTR by participating in the Michigan Twins Project, the Children of Twins Project, or the Healthy Twins Study.  While specific inclusion criteria varies across project, each of these studies involves completion of a short health survey and offers participants the opportunity to receive information about future, more in-depth studies.  You can also join by sending your name, age, and contact information, as well as the twins’ names and ages (if they are younger than 18) to msutr@msu.edu or by participating in one of our other twin studies.

Michigan Twins Project

The Michigan Twins Project (MTP) is a survey of all twins in Michigan ages 3-29.  Twin families are recruited for the MTP through birth records, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.  The MTP includes twins who are living and/or were born in Michigan, as well as twins from surrounding states who are interested in our research.  Families complete and return a brief questionnaire, either online or by mailing in a paper form, that assesses family composition and health status.  Families with twins younger than the age of 18 complete one questionnaire for the family, while adult twins each complete a questionnaire for themselves.  Participants are sent a gift card to thank them for their participation and are given the opportunity to be contacted about future twin studies offering additional financial compensation. Children of Twins Project

Funded by a grant from the MSU Foundation, the Children of Twins Project (COT) is a survey completed by adult twins in Michigan ages 30-55.  Twins are recruited for the COT through birth records, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.  The COT includes twins who are living and/or were born in Michigan, as well as twins from surrounding states who are interested in our research.  To participate, each adult twin completes and returns a brief questionnaire, either online or by mailing in a paper form, that assesses family composition and health status of the adult twins and their children.  Participants are sent a gift card to thank them for their participation and are given the opportunity to be contacted about future twin studies offering additional financial compensation. This study is directed by Drs. S. Alexandra Burt and Kelly Klump.

Healthy Twins Study

We are collecting information on families that have been recruited for the Michigan Twins Project, but have yet to participate.  To make sure our results are as accurate as possible, this study examines similarities between these families and those that have already participated in the Michigan Twins Project.  Families who participate in the Healthy Twins Study are sent a gift card to thank them for their participation and are given the opportunity to be contacted about future twin studies offering additional financial compensation.  This study is directed by Drs.
